Dual NRA - IHMSA sanctioned Handgun - Rifle - Air Pistol Silhouette Shooting year round - The Los Angeles Silhouette Club

The Differences Between  Unlimited  And  Conventional / Production  Categories

Handgun Metallic Silhouette is an amateur family shooting sport. The Conventional / Production categories for both the NRA and IHMSA are designed to keep it an amateur family sport.

The NRA name is "Conventional Pistol" and the IHMSA name is "Production Handgun". It is the same category regardless of the sanction, merely different names for the same thing.

NRA Conventional Pistol And IHMSA Production Handgun Categories

Conventional / Production Categories are as manufactured, unmodified over the counter firearms with a barrel length of 10 3/4" or less. The purpose of the category is so that anyone can go to their local gun store and purchase a firearm no better, no worse than the person shooting next to them. The Conventional category is not an equipment race to see who can spend the most. The only bolt action pistol allowed is in IHMSA Production. IHMSA allows the original XP-100 with 10 3/4" barrel chambered in .221 Fireball caliber when un-modified.

Unlimited Categories

Unlimited Categories are the place for bolt action firearms, customized or match grade tricked out guns. Within a weight limit of 4.5 pounds (5.5 pounds for scoped categories) and a maximum barrel length of 15", the Unlimited Categories are the place for experimenting. All bolt action firearms (example: the XP-100) regardless of the as manufactured or barrel length are Unlimited Category guns. The "Only" exception is the above mentioned for IHMSA Production. Any firearm that has had parts replaced with anything but factory spec parts for the make & model are Unlimited Category guns.
