Lead Balls, Gauge, Diameter, Weight

A "12 Gauge" ball is 1/12th of a pound, there are 12 "12 gauge" balls to the pound, and a gun with a bore equal in size to the diameter of a "12 gauge" ball is a "12 gauge gun".

DIA. = IN., WT. = Grains (specific gravity of lead taken as 11.34)

(Webmaster note: Weights are in grains. 7,000 grains = 1 pound - Notice gauge (row) 1 @ 1.671" Dia. = 7,000 Gr., then row 12 (12 gauge) @ 0.730" Dia. = 583.3 gr. X 12 = 7,000 Gr.)
